Where this began

To create is to heal

As a teenager — a part-time high-school job at a refined art studio in São Paulo — I watched people arrive tense and heavy-hearted, week after week. Many were referred by doctors, psychologists, and therapists. Then they would sit down to stitch Arraiolos.

Through the simple act of stitching in a safe, creative environment, they found relief, connection, and joy. Starting with a blank canvas and turning it into something beautiful was, in itself, a form of healing.

That early experience never left me. The Arraiolos Circle is my way of passing it on.

Why it works

Stitch Your Way to Wellbeing

There's a reason stitching circles have been used in therapeutic settings for over a century. A growing body of research keeps confirming what stitchers have always known: making things by hand, together, is good for us.

A Resilient Mind

The rhythm of the needle anchors attention like meditation. Studies associate hands-on craft with deep relaxation, reduced stress, and sharper focus — a quiet workout for a healthy mind.

A Body at Ease

Slow, repetitive handwork invites the body to settle: shoulders drop, breathing slows. Many stitchers describe rising from the chair lighter than they sat down.

A Thread to Others

Craft connects us across generations — to the hands that stitched before us and the circle stitching beside us. In a world of screens, a shared needle and thread is one of the oldest social networks there is.

The heritage

From a small town in Portugal,
since the 16th century

Arraiolos is a whitewashed town in the Alentejo, near Évora, crowned by a rare circular castle. Its embroidered wool rugs — tapetes de Arraiolos — have been documented since at least the 1500s, born where Portugal's Age of Discoveries met local wool and centuries of textile craft: beneath the town's main square, archaeologists found medieval dyeing vats used from the 13th century.

The earliest designs drew on the Persian and Turkish carpets prized by Portuguese explorers, woven together over time with the patterns of azulejo tiles and the flowers and birds of the Alentejo countryside. When the tradition nearly faded, it was the town's women who revived it in the early 20th century — stitching it back to life, circle by circle.

Every canvas in our Circle honors that visual language. We don't invent random patterns — we revive meaning, one ponto de Arraiolos at a time.

The founder

Luciana Barreto

Luciana first held an Arraiolos needle at sixteen, working part-time at a refined art studio in São Paulo — and never forgot what she saw there: people arriving heavy-hearted and leaving lighter, stitch by stitch.

Born in Brazil, with Portuguese roots and two decades designing experiences across four continents, she founded The Arraiolos Circle in Southern California to share the craft — and the belonging — that shaped her. She welcomes circles in English, Portuguese, and Spanish.
